There is a growing interest
in the education of girls.
The situation at the Madan School is certainly not unique to the area. The educational system was severely disrupted by the many years of war in the country. There are not enough schools for all those who should and would like to study.
Especially girls' education encounters many challenges. Under the Taliban girls could not attend school throughout Afghanistan. Now, the number of girls going to school increases every year. PIN considers this tendency extremly valuable and strives to support and to develop it. PIN wants to help to change the concept of the role of women in Afghanistan.
The Afghan Authority cannot provide the schools with appropriate equipment and the majority of schools are forced to work without basic supplies. Often books or even a carpet to sit on are needed. The level of teaching is also influenced by the lack of qualified teachers, mainly in the countryside. Many of them have not studied for more than nine years...
At first the main goal of Madan was simply building schools. Today, the concept has expanded to include continuous long term support of already existing schools. Madan supports education and increases quality and availability in less accessible areas of northern Afghanistan.
Madan focuses on the education of girls, who are traditionally not widely given access to education.
The basic idea of the project is direct aid. Madan is low profile and works to directly address the most pressing needs of a community. The Madan project acts in communities where the local people are strongly motivated to gain better access to education. Be it building a new school or supporting an already existing school, all works result from a dialogue between People in Need mission coordinators and the local community.
Madan also stresses an openness towards donors and stakeholders. To the extent possible, PIN works to continually inform interested parties about actual project realization and the use of financial resources.
