Barriers and motivators to using reusable shopping bags as an alternative to light plastic bags in the Syunik province of Armenia

From July 2019 to March 2020, the non-governmental organization People in Need (PIN) is implementing the project “Reduce, Reuse! Become a Friend of Nature” funded by the British Embassy in Yerevan. This intervention aims to contribute to lasting reduction in the usage of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) bags in the Syunik province of Armenia. These bags are currently provided free of charge by most major shops and contribute to an unsustainable overuse of natural resources, and physical as well as visual pollution of the environment. As a part of the project, PIN Armenia conducted research intending to understand the real, not assumed, barriers and motivators to using reusable bags. The research findings were expected to contribute to refining the project’s behaviour change strategy.
