People in Need Human Rights Cuba

Cuba

Despite the fact that since Raúl Castro’s rise to power in 2006 there have been reforms in various sectors, compliance to basic human rights outlined in the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights remains the worst in all of Latin America.

Homo Homini 2015 has been awarded to Cuban disidents.

The Communist Party of Cuba remains the only recognised political party and activities which are not in line with the government’s stance are continually suppressed. Several hundred activists are temporarily detained every month. Broadcasting, print and television all fall under the absolute control of the government and various independent media outlets are blocked even on the internet which remains inaccessible to the majority of Cubans. This is mostly because of the price (an hour of internet is equivalent to a tenth of a Cuban monthly wage) and due to the fact that there are fewer than 100 internet access points. The next elections will be held in the country in 2018 however only the Communist Party are expected to participate.

After the release of a large part of the long-term political prisoners in 2010 and the growing development of small civic initiatives, People in Need decided to reassess its operations in Cuba and to focus more on supporting active civic society.  This has a greater chance of cultivating the democratization of the authoritarian regime. PIN has of course continued to support political prisoners and their families on the island.

An important part of the activities in Cuba is also support of journalists and free media on the island in order for them to improve the quality of their output, and increase the connections of Cuban journalists with their colleagues abroad.
