Libya

Protests against authoritative regimes in the Arab Spring countries and the subsequent fall of various governments in 2010/2011 arose from and furthered the widespread political involvement of citizens, and the establishment of new civic initiatives striving to enhance democratic and social values. Such activities had often led to persecution under the former regimes across the region. However, some of the rising political elites have been oscillating between implementing genuine democratic reforms and following the practices of the ousted leaders to deal with the emerging political reality.

In Egypt, a deteriorating economic and political situation has continued to lead thousands of people out onto the streets. The Libyan state has struggled to build up new democratic institutions against the backdrop of traditional tribal structures and various political interests. Civil society organisations are among the key actors trying to chart the course of democratic transformation amidst these challenges.

People in Need started working in Egypt and Libya in the Spring of 2011 with the objective of assisting and supporting civic and state initiatives calling for key democratic reforms. The first projects focused on sharing and discussing specific areas of reform that could draw from the Czech experience with post-revolution transformation, as well as on practical support for civil society groups.
