Nicaragua

Nicaragua was embroiled in a bloody civil war between the Contras and Sandinistas throughout the 70’s and 80’s and in recent years the human rights situation in the country has continaully worsened.

Despite the constitution not allowing a president to repeatedly enter office, President Ortega was elected for a second term. Subsequently in 2014 the constitution was amended so as to allow reelection while at the same time giving the president direct control over the army and police force. The majority of media in the country is in the hands of the state or is owned by state-favoring entrepreneurs. Likewise the space for organisations independent of the state continues to shrink as state universities for example do not allow these organisations to arrange lectures for students. Those who wish to participate in protests are forbidden to travel to protest locations and these are violently disbanded. In 2013 the government granted a Chinese entrepreneur a concession to construct a mega-canal connecting the Pacific and Atlantic oceans which occurred without the consultation of the civil society or any form of study on the environmental impact. It is estimated that during the canal construction, 40 thousand people will need to be rehoused (mostly farmers) and the impact on the environment will be enormous. The next elections will happen in the country in the fall of 2016 with Ortega again in the running for a 3rd term.
