Moldova - Transnistria

People in Need has been active in Moldova since 2003. We were mainly focusing on human rights and democracy projects on the both banks of the Nistru river.

After 2009 the Relief and Development Department of People in Need started implementing development projects on the right bank. The Center for Human Rights and Democracy of People in Need continued with the human rights projects on the left bank, being one of the first international organizations directly working with the Transnistrian civil society.

SUPPORT FOR CIVIL SOCIETY

Our focus in Transnistria is capacity building for local activists and organizations. In the course of the past years we have assisted in establishing and institutionally supported a network of Information and Legal Centers and Citizens’ Clubs #19 in three towns – Tiraspol (organization “A priori”), Dubossary (organization “Akkolada”) and Rybnitsa (organization “Vialex”). Information and legal centers provide free legal aid and informational support to the individuals, as well as initiative groups and other organizations. Citizens’ Clubs #19 regularly organize educational, cultural or informational events, - such as film and documentary screenings, exhibitions, discussions and debates – aimed at increasing the level of civic education and responsibility in the society.

Additionally, we have been actively looking or, supporting and building the capacities of small local initiatives, mostly in remote areas, to act on a local level, protect public interests and strengthen the role of civil society in the decision-making process.

ADVOCACY ACTIVITIES

Furthermore, we’ve been consistently advocating for Transnistrian civil society on the international level. Our goal is to encourage donors’ community, as well as international counterparts, to talk directly to Transnistrian organizations and include them as an equal partner into the discussion about the region and its problems and needs.
