Ukraine

After preliminary observation and careful evaluation of the situation, we decided to support independent journalists and media in eastern Ukraine, where the strong influence of Russian state television channels often deliberately corrupts reality and induce fear among local residents. There is a lack of pluralism, local journalists have very bad conditions for their work and they are often becoming targets of both vocal and physical attacks.

In Zaporozhye and Donetsk, we supported two independent local television channels and news website, which are not under the control of the State or any local oligarchs.

We also support lawyers and activists, with whom we have worked before within the networks of legal counseling offices in Crimea.  Many of them had to leave the peninsula and they currently live in Kiev and Lviv, where they organize legal advice to internal refugees from Crimea and provide online or telephone consultations to people who stay in Crimea.  Many ukrainian citizens in Crimea face coercion to change citizenship under threat of expropriation of assets.

People in Need (PIN) has been working in Ukraine since 2003. Its projects are focused on supporting civil society, primarily in the southern and eastern parts of the country. During its 10 years of operations in Ukraine, PIN has helped to educate journalists, local authorities and non-governmental organizations. Since 2008, PIN has operated systematically in Crimea.
