Venezuela

The political and economic situation in Venezuela has worsened significantly since the death of President Hugo Chávez in March, 2013. While officially 1 USD has the value of 6.35 bolivars, on the black market it is sold for 900 bolivars. Practically all goods with the exception of gasoline are in short supply and hour-long queues in front of shops are common for even basic supplies such as toilet paper. The opposition is harshly suppressed by the regime and there are over 60 political prisoners in the country. Amongst them is the leader of the strongest opposition party Leopoldo Lopéz who was sentenced to 14 years in a manipulated trial during which the absolute control of the government over the justice system became evident. The security situation in the country is also extremely poor as yearly over 40 thousand people are murdered. The results of the elections in December 2015 sparked hope in the country with a landslide victory for the united opposition over the party of incumbent President Madura.

People in Need has worked in Venezuela since 2014 when it began supporting independent nongovernmental organisations and even individuals, whom it provides with small grants so that they may complete their projects. It also deals with increasing awareness of the situation in Venezuela and helps Venezuelan activists organise trips abroad during which they have the opportunity to speak at international conferences and forums and meet with representatives of various institutions and states.
