Environment & Local Development
Cambodia in brief
Cambodia has experienced significant economic growth and development. This trend brings an increasing demand for domestic energy sources, which currently consist of 93% charcoal and firewood from surrounding forests. Burning the wood releases large amounts of greenhouse gases, which are one of the main causes of global warming. Moreover, extensive deforestation contributes to soil erosion and negatively affects the living conditions of local people as well as the natural environment.
People in Need therefore, in close cooperation with the National Biodigester Programme, construction companies and banks, supports the development of a market-based biodigester sector. The programme thus contributes to the reduction of deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions and helps people to improve their livelihoods and protect the natural environment.
