In response to the explosion in Beirut, Lebanon, People in Need (PIN) has released 500,000 CZK (20,000 EUR) from its Club of Friends fund to support the city’s massive relief efforts.

The aid, which will provide immediate assistance to people who have lost their homes as a result of the explosion, is being administered by our partner organisation, People in Need Slovakia. Additional funding needs will be identified on site.

"According to initial reports, the most urgent requirements are water, food, medicine, and shelter,” says Pavlína Millionová, PIN’s Desk Officer for the Middle East. “The rapid reaction was created in cooperation with People in Need Slovakia, which has been operating in Lebanon for a long time."

"Crisis-stricken Lebanon is facing a long and costly reconstruction of Beirut, and we now want to help with urgent needs.”

Direct assistance will be provided by SB OverSeas, while humanitarian workers from PIN Slovakia will help identify beneficiaries.

Lebanon declared a state of emergency in the capital following the explosion, which killed at least 135 people and injured more than 5,000. The blast’s pressure wave caused extensive damage throughout the city, and according to the Beirut governor, as many as 300,000 people lost their homes, at least temporarily.

"Crisis-stricken Lebanon is facing a long and costly reconstruction of Beirut, and we now want to help with urgent needs,” says Jan Mrkvička, Director of PIN’s Relief and Development Department. “There is chaos on the ground and a lot of people will be without resources and without help. Fortunately, thanks to the Club of Friends, we were able to act swiftly.”

Immediate help is possible thanks to donors who regularly contribute to PIN’s Club of Friends, aid that can be deployed quickly in response to humanitarian disasters. In addition to the support from PIN, aid is also being provided by the government of the Czech Republic.
