In Afghanistan, PIN has been active since 2001, responding to humanitarian needs and implementing targeted development programs. Today PIN activities are conducted from program offices in Paktya, Nangarhar, Samangan and Herat, as well as two central offices in Kabul and Mazar-e Sharif. The program is run by 3 expatriate staff and approximately 130 national staff members. PIN programs focus on infrastructure development through local governance, agriculture, urban poverty, and emergency relief, with support from a variety of key donors, including European member states, Czech Development Agency, BMZ, and USAID OFDA. PIN has a long-term strategic commitment to contribute to the alleviation of suffering caused by extreme poverty and natural or man-made disasters in Afghanistan, by providing neutral and impartial relief and assistance, regardless of the prevailing national and international dynamics. PIN aims to support existing local governance structures and promote community based approaches to avoid undermining local structures.

People in Need started to work in Mongolia in 2009 when the country was hit by dzud, an extremely harsh winter. PIN provided humanitarian assistance to families of herdsmen that helped them recover their small agricultural businesses and better prepare for possible dzuds in the future. Since 2011, PIN has been helping Mongolians develop agriculture, improve vocational education, upscale their business opportunities, and establish mobile health services. Currently we continue to assist the most vulnerable herder families affected by dzud, including long-term preparedness measures. We bring innovative solutions for the construction sector, helping small households increase energy efficiency and reduce pollution in the cities. We help forward cutting-edge technologies, facilitating exchanges between Czech and Mongolian universities and promoting research. In the aimags, we help local small business, cooperatives and associations find investment opportunities to upscale their production and build local economy.

Our work in Mongolia consists of a broad portfolio managed by a small team (up to 10 individuals) based in UB. Our annual turnover is approx. 800,000 EUR of mostly institutional funding (EC, Czech government funds). Our head office is in UB, we implement projects in UB, Arkhangai, Uvurkhangai, Dornod and Sukhbaatar.
