People in Need Human Rights

Human Rights

The primary goals of People in Need's Centre for Human Rights and Democracy is to support people and independent groups, working in countries with repressive regime, that are target of persecutions, bullying or arrests because of their opinions or independent activities and to strengthen civil society in countries that are going through democratic transformation.

We have focused our work on repressive and transitional countries since the 1990s. We are curently running programmes with our partners in Eastern Europe (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Moldova (Transnistria), Russia and Ukraine), Latin America (Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua), Egypt, Libya and Myanmar.

OUR MAIN ACTIVITIES:

In 2015 we provided aid to 948 people - lawyers, independent critical journalists, bloggers, students, and activists who care about the fate of their country, who believe in basic human values, and who, as a result, are persecuted in their country, as well as standard citizens whose rights are violated due to the lack of a functioning legal state or the despotism of the local authorities.

in 2015 we provided aid to 462 civil society representatives - lawyers, critical journalists, independent activists and NGOs.

We have various activities aimed at drawing attention to human rights abuses and obtaining broader political support for protecting these rights.

LifeLine logoPIN is a member of the Lifeline consortium of seven NGOs which focus on providing support to embattled civil society organisations and individuals in repressive environments.

People in Need also gives the annual Homo Homini Award and organizes the One World International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival.
