People in Need is calling for applications for the position of Team Lead within East European Program of the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (HRD). The primary goal of the Centre for Human Rights and Democracy is to support independent human rights activists and groups in countries with repressive regimes who are the target of persecution, harassment, or arrests because of their opinions or activities, and to strengthen civil society in countries that are going through democratic transformation.

The East European Program is currently focusing on support of independent civil society in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Moldova/Transnistria, Russia, Ukraine and post-soviet countries of Central Asia. The main programmatic focus includes:
  • Capacity building for civil society organisations, journalists, lawyers and support for their activities
  • Direct aid to politically persecuted individuals and their families
  • International advocacy
Type of position: Team Lead
Location: Prague (with work-related trips abroad)
Starting date: June-July 2019
Type of contract:  Full-time, unlimited contract (6 months trial period)

TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Planning and coordinating particular country program activities, primarily focused on the capacity support of human rights defenders, activists in the post-Soviet countries
  • Development of projects, including project proposal writing and reporting, supervision of project proposals preparation within the team
  • Administration of project documentation, cooperation with Finance officers on budgets for individual projects 
  • Manage the team of  5 people, provide support, guidance and feedback to the team staff
  • Ensure effective operation of the team and exchange of experience between team members, brainstorming on the upcoming activities
  • Provide input to the Head of East European Program on strategic development of the Capacity building program for human rights defenders
  • Provide common input for the advocacy plans and particular country programs
  • Coordinate cross-cutting activities/public events organised within the team
  • Occasional coordination field visits to the target region
  • Regular contact with local partner organizations and with donors

SUITABLE CANDIDATES SHOULD POSSESS:

  • University degree in the field of international relations, political science or other relevant fields
  • Fluency in Russian and English. Native or non-native knowledge of Czech is also welcome, but not essential
  • At least three years’ experience at national or international level in the area of civil society, human rights, or international development
  • Experience in people management
  • Good understanding of political issues and trends in the region of the former Soviet Union
  • Good insight and understanding of the human rights situation, challenges and needs of human rights defenders and activists in the post-Soviet countries, expertise on Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, Central Asia is an asset
  • Excellent organizational, leadership and communicational skills
  • Ability to set priorities and supervise their implementation, effectively manage time and handle multiple assignments
  • Ability to work under stress
  • Conceptual thinking and reliability
